The Jim Thompson Art Center is delighted to present two exhibitions: Germaine Krull: The Return of the Avant-Gardist, co-curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers, Curator, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin and Maren Niemeyer, Director, Goethe Institut, Thailand; and News From Yesteryear: An Insight into the James H.W. Thompson Foundation’s Archive, curated by Bruno Lemercier, Senior Conservator, The James H.W. Thompson Foundation, Bangkok. The juxtaposition of these two exhibitions is crucial to revisiting the origins of Thailand’s art and cultural landscape in the 1950s and 60s that were partly influenced by two prominent figures known as forward-thinking expats: James H.W. Thompson and Germaine Krull, both of whom arrived in Thailand after WWII due to their wartime duties. While Thompson was with the US Army before establishing the Thai Silk Company in Thailand, Krull traveled through Asia as a war correspondent and later became a director of the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok. They were once partners on a project to renovate the Oriental Hotel, but the collaboration never materialized. Remarkably, they left Thailand at roughly the same time; Germaine Krull left Bangkok for Paris in 1966; and Jim Thompson disappeared in Malaysia in 1967. There are some hints of a connection between them, but they rarely acknowledged each other’s presence, although we did find a few photos in the James H.W. Thompson Foundation’s archives with the Germaine Krull’s photo studio stamp on the back. These two exhibitions offer those attending a journey into a bygone era with all its mysteries and revelations of the new world order.

Very limited parking is available at the Jim Thompson Art Center. We recommend using the BTS skytrain (National Stadium, Exit 1). Follow the sign to the James H.W. Thompson Foundation, Kasemsan Soi 2. It is a five-minute walk from the station.
Remark: COVID-19 prevention measures remain in force, please wear a mask and practice social distancing. Your kind understanding and cooperation would be highly appreciated.
